Dear Mom and Dad,
Let me first say I’m not writing to ask for more money. That’s a plus right!? I want you both to get into this calm and relaxed state of mind. Listen to some Bob Dylan, light a scented candle, or what the hell…start yoga. Breath in and breath out….keep calm and please carry on.
It’s about 2:50 am and I just got back from the bus stop. Angela left to go back home tonight. Ireland just isn’t for her. She hasn’t had the best of luck.
- Plane ride–Irish woman beside her got sick for most of the plane ride.
- Our heater is broken in our room and she really hated that, which is understandable.. it’s really awful. Also, all of Ireland is cold.
- Homesick to the MAX!
- Biggest and breaking point: Classes got messed up. None of the classes that we signed up for back home are being offered now. We actually don’t have classes and possibly won’t get fixed till next week.
But please, don’t freak out. I’m going to be okay on my own. This is the best thing for Angela, because she has really been miserable since we got here. I hated seeing her cry and I think everyone knows that I’m the worst consoler in the world. Doesn’t matter what country I’m in, I’m still just as awkward.
I chose to do this trip to see what I could do on my own. I wanted and needed a challenge and the chance to test myself. Columbus State has only taught me what is in a book. This semester I think I’ll learn more than any book could ever teach me.
I’m having the best time here though. My roommates,Sharon and Dara could not be more fabulous! They are both very welcoming and beyond hilarious! Irish humor is crazy funny! Dry humor, but if you get the jokes, you won’t stop laughing. We went to a house party tonight and are going out tomorrow night. Sharon plays traditional Irish music, so tomorrow night we are going into the city to watch her play. Dara is her boyfriend and he is just great! He loves to clean and cook..”hello amazing boyfriend!” Sharon is one lucky girl. He also has a car, which rocks because we don’t have to take the bus to the city centre. They have already taken me all over Galway and are going to show me more this week.
So, I know you might be upset about me being here “alone,” but we both know that I’m not alone and never will be.
So do not fear for I am with you, do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand
1 Corinthians 10:13
No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.
You may have thought I was asleep during church, but I was listening. You have always told me that God will never give me more than I can handle.
I can do everything through him who gives me strength
Last, I’ll end with Mom’s favorite verse…
Isaiah 40:31 NIV
but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on the wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be fain
So please, do not worry about the small change of plans. I’m going to take the same advice that I gave you. I’m going to keep calm and carry on. Everything is going to all right and I’ll see you in June.
With much love,
